Galapagos Island Hopping with San Vicente

Santa Cruz & Isabela Island

Itinerary 4 days / 3 nights*

Day 1: Our tour starts with your arrival at the Baltra Airport from either Guayaquil or Quito. From here, our English-speaking guide will accompany us on the three-hour public speedboat to Isabela Island. Once you arrive at the San Vicente Hotel, take advantage of a short siesta, and then join us on the drive to Flamingo Lagoon, the largest lagoon in the archipelago and home to a large population of flamingoes.

Day 2: Day two starts after your early morning breakfast. The whole day will be dedicated to exploring the world's second largest volcanic crater at the Sierra Negra Volcano. Just a 13 mile drive from Puerto Villamil, you will witness its gargantuan size, at 6 miles in diameter and 300 feet deep. After hiking around and taking in the view, we will continue on to our next volcano - Volcan Chico, which is an active volcano.

We will provide a boxed lunch. After your excursion to the volcanoes, you will go back to the hotel to prepare for the snorkeling opportunity later on at Concha Perla. All equipment will be provided.

Day 3: After breakfast, we will visit the Isabela Island Breeding Center. Here, we will learn more about the Galapagos tortoise breeding program and the efforts to preserve these gentle giants. We will continue our visit at the Wall of Tears, where inmates that were banished from the mainland and relocated on Isabela were forced to build this infamous wall. You will be astonished by the size of the rocks and the conditions in which they were forced to work. Afterwards, we will visit some small lava tunnels that are close by, and then a small lake on the island, visited by flamingoes. We will return to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon we will visit Tintoreras Islet. The name comes from the white-tipped reef shark, known as tintorera in Spanish. At this islet, Galapagos penguins often play in the shallows, so take this chance to snorkel alongside colorful tropical fish and white-tipped sharks. After this visit we will return to the hotel for a night of relaxation.

Day 4: Early in the morning, we will be boarding a speedboat to Santa Cruz. This is public shared transportation that will take us to Santa Cruz, from which point you can take your flight back to the continental mainland.

After hiking around and taking in the view, we will continue on to our next volcano - Volcan Chico, which is an active volcano.

Day 3: Take a journey into Isabela Island's dark history as a penal colony, as you visit "The Wall of Tears." After breakfast, you will see where prisoners in the mid-20th century slaved to build this wall of heavy lava rock in harsh conditions. We will also visit the tortoise breeding center, a lava tunnel, and another flamingo lagoon.

After a good lunch at the hotel, the afternoon will offer you a chance to head to "Las Tintoreras," an area famous for its calm, clear waters, where colonies of white-tipped reef sharks are known to rest. This is also a good spot to see penguins, sea lions, and the famous sea-going marine iguana. If you choose to snorkel, keep your eyes open for sharks and the rainbow of tropical fish.

Day 4: Early in the morning we will board the speedboat to Santa Cruz Island. It's a public service, meaning that it will be a shared transfer. Once on Santa Cruz, a guide from the National Park will be waiting for you. He will accompany you to breakfast and then to the Charles Darwin Research Station. Here you will be able to see the giant tortoises living in captivity as well as the artificial breeding process that is used in order to preserve this species.

Later on, we will visit the highlands of Santa Cruz, an ecosystem very different from the rest of the Island; the highlands are the natural habitat of the giant tortoises, so here you will be able to see them wandering freely in the muddy cloud forest environment. After the visit, you will return to your hotel where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 5: On the last day, you will be transferred back to Baltra Island for your flight to the mainland. On your way to the Baltra airport, we will stop at the Twin Craters – two giant sinkholes formed by the land that fell in when lava flows passed beneath. From here, you will take a trip back to either Guayaquil or Quito.

Santa Cruz & Isabela Island

Itinerary 6 days / 5 nights*

Day 1: Our tour starts with your arrival at the Baltra Airport from either Guayaquil or Quito. From here, our English-speaking guide will accompany us on the three-hour public speedboat to Isabela Island. Once you arrive at the San Vicente Hotel, take advantage of a short siesta, and then join us on the drive to Flamingo Lagoon, the largest lagoon in the archipelago and home to a large population of flamingoes.

After hiking around and taking in the view, we will continue on to our next volcano - Volcan Chico, which is an active volcano.

In the afternoon after lunch we will visit the gorgeous beach of Concha Perla, this small quiet beach is home of thousands of tropical fish that can easily be seen if you do some snorkel around close to the shore. We will return to the hotel after this relaxing activity.

Day 3: After breakfast, we will visit the Isabela Breeding Center, where giant tortoises are nurtured until they are able to live on their own in the wild. Afterwards, we will take a journey into Isabela Island's dark history as a penal colony, as you visit “The Wall of Tears.” After breakfast, you will see the site where prisoners in the mid-20th century slaved to build this wall of heavy lava rock in harsh conditions.

Later on, we will have lunch and then visit the islet called Tintoreras, this name is due to the Galapagos reef shark (in Spanish “tintorera”) that dwell in these waters. Here you can snorkel in the tranquil waters and swim alongside colorful tropical fish. You might even be able to get an up close look at the Galapagos Penguin.

Day 4: After a good lunch at the hotel, we will explore the shores of Puerto Villamil in kayaks. We might have the opportunity to see the Galapagos penguin, marine iguanas and other animals that live close to the shores of Isabela. After lunch at the hotel, you will visit the highlands of Isabela, a very different ecosystem than that of the shore. The highlands are considered a cloud forest, both beautiful and tranquil. You will be guided to the cavern of Sucre, and you will have the chance to take some amazing photos from El Mango lookout. During this visit you will see the giant tortoises up close in their natural habitat.

Day 5: Early in the morning, we will take the public speed boat to Santa Cruz. This is a shared transfer that will take us to our next adventure. Upon arrival, your naturalist guide will take you to the Charles Darwin Research Station, where you will learn more about the conservation projects undertaken by the Station and their efforts to preserve this natural paradise. After lunch we will visit the highlands; just like on Isabela, giant tortoises call this cloud forest home as well. You will be provided with rubber boots in order to walk in the muddy terrain of the highlands while you look at the giant Galapagos tortoises.

Day 6: On your way to the Baltra airport, we will stop at the Twin Craters, two giant depressions formed by sinking land and the lava flows that pass beneath. From here, you will take a trip back to either Guayaquil or Quito.

San Cristobal, Santa Cruz & Isabela Island

Itinerary 8 days / 7 nights*

Day 1: You will arrive at the San Cristobal Airport from Guayaquil or Quito. Here you will have lunch. At the Interpretation Center, you will have a chance to learn about the islands' history and ecology. We will then visit Playa Man, where we can relax and enjoy the white sand and crystal clear waters of the islands. We will spend the night on San Cristobal.

Day 2: In the morning, after breakfast, we will visit the Mirador de la Soledad lookout point; here you will enjoy some beautiful sights of the island. We will return to the lodge for lunch, and in the afternoon we will visit the highlands. The highlands of San Cristobal consist of a cloud forest, where vegetation is more luscious due to the amount of water. Small puddles of water serve as drinking fountains for many birds. A special resident can also be seen in this area – the Galapagos tortoise. This is their natural habitat, so you might be able to see them walking leisurely through this area. After this visit, we will return to our hotel to rest for the next day's adventure.

Day 3: Early in the morning you will take the public speedboat to Santa Cruz Island. This shared transfer between islands takes about two and a half hours and will take us to the most populated town in the Islands. Upon arrival, your guide will take you to the Charles Darwin Research Station, known worldwide because it hosts researchers and scientists from all over the world who conduct research in order to understand life and how it has evolved. After visiting the Station, we will continue to the highlands, where we will visit a private ranch that serves as a reserve for giant tortoises and other animals that live in this fragile ecosystem. We will spend the night at Santa Cruz in our hotel.

Day 4: In the morning, we will visit one of the Galapagos' most famous beaches and without a doubt one of the most beautiful ones: Tortuga Beach. We will take some time to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery as well as the white sandy beach and the crystal clear waters of this idyllic place. After lunch we will take a shared transfer on a public speedboat to Isabela Island. The trip lasts about two and a half hours. Once on Isabela, we will visit the flamingo lagoon, a small pond where flamingos usually come to feed. We will have dinner and spend the night at Isabela Island.

Day 5: In the morning, we will visit the Sierra Negra Volcano, home to the second largest volcanic crater in the world and one of the most beautiful sights on Isabela. On a clear day, you can see the petrified lava in the base of the crater, forming gigantic lava walls and tunnels. Everyone agrees that this is a unique and marvelous sight. We will continue to Volcan Chico. This is a difficult hike over loose rocks and dry lava, so be prepared for the adventure. In the afternoon, we will visit the quiet beach of Concha Perla, where we will be able to do some snorkeling. We will then spend the night at the hotel.

Day 6: After breakfast, we will visit Isabela's Giant Tortoise Breeding Center, where you will be able to see these docile giants being raised in captivity before being released into the wild. We will continue to the Wall of Tears – part of Isabela's dark history, when it was used as a penal colony and the inmates were forced to build this giant wall in harsh conditions and extremely hot weather. Next, we will visit a small lava tunnel and then a pond where flamingos usually come to feed. Later in the afternoon, we will visit the Tintoreras Islets, where you will be able to swim and snorkel, surrounded by colorful tropical fish, sea lions, and other residents of these idyllic islands. We will spend the night at the hotel.

Here you will have excellent opportunities to take stunning photos of the shores and the wildlife that lives close to them, like marine iguanas and sea lions. This small cloud forest is home to different species of birds and some Galapagos tortoises. We will visit the Sucre Cave and the Mango lookout point, which will give you a breathtaking view of the island. Dinner and overnight will be spent on Isabela.

Day 8: On your way to the Baltra airport, we will stop at the Twin Craters, two giant depressions formed by sinking land and the lava flows that pass beneath. From here, you will take a trip back to either Guayaquil or Quito.
