Named "Santa Cruz" in Spanish for the Holy Cross, the island’s English name originates from the British vessel HMS Indefatigable. Santa Cruz has an area of 986 square kilometers (381 sq mi) and a maximum altitude of 864 meters (2,834 ft). It is home to the largest human population in the archipelago, located in the town of Puerto Ayora. The Charles Darwin Research Station and the headquarters of the Galápagos National Park Service are based here.
